The Community Kitchen
The Community Kitchen
In response to the needs of our community, we have started our Community Kitchen enterprise, in the heart of Saltash Fore Street.
Our Community Kitchen is the home of our Community Fridge, the Mobile Larder, a Community Kitchen, a Community Café and the host location for Digital Inclusion and Dementia Voice activities and events.
The Community Kitchen will be a town centre hub, pivotal to our aim of making PL12 an even better place to live, work and enjoy. It is a destination for volunteer-led activities and community interaction.
In November 2020, we responded to community needs during the Covid-19 pandemic and opened our Community Fridge.
Whilst it had been planned for some time, we simply didn't have the space needed to host the Community Fridge within our existing premises at the Community Hub. When the pandemic hit, everything was turned on its head, and the need for the Community Fridge was too great. Since then, it has shared the Community Hub premises alongside our shop, transport, workshops, jigsaw swap and information. To say it's a little space that's well-filled would be a slight understatement!
Since its inception, the Community Fridge has gone from strength to strength, saving over 15 tonnes of food from being wasted and serving over 11,000 people in its first year.
Now the time has come for our Community Fridge to have its own, permanent home, so we have taken a 10-year lease on number 8 Fore Street.
This will become the Community Kitchen and the permanent home for the Community Fridge, as well as our Dementia Voice café, and Digital Inclusion space.
Economic, social, and environmental sustainability are all central to our plan. We aim to further strengthen partnerships with other local organisations, businesses and charities, and we expand on the opportunities provided by our enterprises for social activities, creative sessions, training, skill-sharing, work experience, life skills, sustainability and increasing footfall to Fore Street. As with all our enterprises, this will all be volunteer-led.
The building is currently undergoing extensive refurbishments, supported by Weatherhead Shopfitters, the Co-op, and Hubbub. We have received so many donations of equipment & furnishings; a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us to get this far.
We anticipate opening in February 2022.
The Community Kitchen will be open for bookable morning, afternoon and evening sessions; a timetable will be available soon.
In the meantime, to make a booking please contact our hub on 01752 848348 or email email@example.com
